CONSULT FEES

Today, I received a call from a prospective client who became upset when I declined to provide a "ballpark" estimate of my fees for representing them in a family law matter prior to the payment of the consultation fee. The matter in question was a divorce.
I do not quote fees without a comprehensive understanding of the case for several reasons, including but not limited to:
Every case is distinct, with varying facts. I offer my clients and potential clients personalized attention, treating each case as unique and significant. During the consultation, I ensure I understand the specific details and nuances of their case, learning about their priorities and concerns. This process allows me to build a rapport with them, whether through an in-person meeting, phone call, or Zoom consultation. Early in my career, I learned the importance of knowing my clients and their cases, unlike the first attorney I worked for, who was often unfamiliar with his clients and their issues when they called.
In rare cases, I may waive consultation fees. However, during a consultation, I provide my time and expertise, discussing your case and devising a strategy to represent and advocate for you. I am aware of my own value and that of my clients. If a potential client cannot afford the consultation fee, they are unlikely to be able to hire me. I aim to avoid wasting anyone's time or resources. Charging a consultation fee also helps deter those who seek a consultation merely to prevent their spouse or opposing party from doing the same.
If I am retained on the day of the consultation (meaning the client decides to hire me, signs a Fee Agreement and Engagement Letter, and either pays the initial retainer or flat fee in full or makes a payment toward it), I credit the consultation fee toward their first invoice.
Currently, I charge $250-$300 for a consultation, depending on the type of case. This fee is subject to change at any time. Additionally, I offer discounts on the consultation fee during certain months, depending on the case type or relevant events. For instance, this month is National Caregiver's Month. Caregivers, whether professional or familial, receive a 50% discount on their consultation upon verification.
